My interests
What are your interests?
Many school students are unsure about the work they would like to do in the future. It’s important to start thinking and planning your career early, before Year 9, if possible.
One way to work out what you would like to do is to start thinking about your interests, your values and skills.
The TAFE NSW website It’s your choice has a list of key questions to ask to find out more about your interests.
For a quiz about your interests and skills, complete the career quiz at the Job Juice website.
Match jobs to your interests
Once you have a broad list of your interests, values and skills, you can try to match them with possible jobs or occupations. You can find out more about occupations at the My future website.
Once you have worked out your interests, you can match them with:
- subjects at school
- occupations
- work experience opportunities
- vocational education courses at school
- post school programs.
The Department of Disability Ageing and Home Care provides two Post School Programs for eligible young people with a disability: Transition to Work and Community Participation. These programs assist young people with moderate to high support needs to develop the skills they need to work towards their short and long term goals, increase their independence, and participate as valued and active members of the community. The programs are person centred, flexible, specifically designed for young people with varying disabilities and support needs, and have a focus on outcomes.
